Welcome
Callachally House is a large farmhouse, sitting in its own enclosed grounds of just under an acre. Surrounded by mature trees, it is sheltered and private. On still summer nights you can just hear the murmur of waves. Sea Eagles are often seen from the sunny garden at the back of the house.
A short walk takes you to an unspoilt grey sand beach on the Sound of Mull with wonderful northerly views towards Tobermory and the Ardnamurchan Peninsular. If you are lucky (and quiet) you may see the resident otters playing in the shallows.
This spacious house is centrally located for exploring the beautiful Isle of Mull. Several lovely beaches are within easy reach, and a trip to Iona is highly recommended. Callachally is two miles from the small village of Salen, with its well stocked Spar shop, Post Office, Petrol Station, Pub and Italian Restaurant. The Glenforsa Hotel is 10 minutes walk from the house, serving bar meals overlooking the Sound of Mull.
Tobermory, the colourful island capital, is a 12 mile scenic drive up the east coast of Mull, at times with wonderful extensive views up and down the Sound. It is well served by a selection of shops, a great deli/bakery, an Arts centre, bank, restaurants and pubs – and it is home now to the well respected Mull Theatre.
The house, dating back in part to the 1600’s, has been in its time a Drovers’ Inn, belonging at one stage to Major General Lachlan McQuarrie (founding Father of Australia); a Victorian sporting lodge and latterly a much loved family house.
Although the house will comfortably sleep 10, it is arranged in such a way as to be cosy for parties of 2 or 4. With its open fires, efficient central heating and wood panelled rooms it is easy to enjoy a short break or a week in the autumn or winter months, when the island becomes more itself after the summer season ends.
There is good walking from the house, up Glenforsa with Beinn Talaidh (2496 feet) at its head – affording wonderful views into the interior of the island and up Loch Linnhe to the Nevis range.
The house is situated on a traditional working farm with magnificent Highland Cattle and Blackface sheep. The working sheep dogs are kennelled in the farm steading (buildings) nearby, within earshot of the house.
